Health Testing
Health & Genetic Testing Standards
At Argos Kennels, the health, temperament, and genetic integrity of our dogs are our top priorities. Every dog in our breeding program undergoes rigorous health testing to ensure we are producing sound, reliable, and well-structured companions — whether for family life, working roles, or sport.
Health & Genetic Testing Standards
To uphold the highest standards, all breeding dogs are tested for the following:
HD (Hip Dysplasia): All dogs receive official evaluations to ensure strong hip structure and mobility, minimizing the risk of hereditary joint issues.
ED (Elbow Dysplasia): We test for elbow joint development to prevent chronic issues that could affect performance or quality of life.
Rottweiler-Specific Testing
For our Rottweiler lines, we go a step further by testing for:
JLPP (Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis & Polyneuropathy): A serious hereditary condition that we actively screen against to ensure we never pass it on to future litters.
We breed from only JLPP-clear dogs to promote strong genetics and long-term health in our Rottweiler pups.
Working Line Excellence
Many of our breeding dogs come from titled lines with proven success in:
Dog Sports (such as IGP/Schutzhund)
Police Detection
Search and Rescue Programs
Why Titled Lines Matter for Health
Titled dogs, especially those with working titles in sports like IGP (formerly Schutzhund), police detection, or search and rescue are not just trained for performance. They’ve also passed extensive evaluations that indirectly reinforce genetic health and structural soundness.
Here’s how:
Physical Resilience: Dogs competing in demanding sports must have excellent orthopedic health — strong hips, elbows, and joints — to endure years of high-impact training. Only dogs with sound structure can reach and maintain title-level performance.
Temperament Stability: Titled dogs are tested for nerve strength, obedience, confidence, and social stability — all of which have a genetic component and are critical for both working success and family suitability.
Selective Breeding Pressure: Breeders who pursue titles are more likely to make intentional, disciplined choices — using dogs that not only perform well but pass health checks and have longevity in their lines.
Verified Lineage: Titles often come with comprehensive documentation, which helps ensure transparency in bloodlines, allowing breeders to avoid inbreeding, hereditary disease, and undesirable traits.
